Course Description

Who Is This Program For

Best suited for students who wish to improve their English as quickly as possible. This includes students seeking fluency for entry into a U.S. college, university or conversational use in a professional setting.

Program covers all of the major language skills including: grammar, vocabulary, conversation, pronunciation, listening comprehension, reading, and writing.
 

Class Schedule: Morning Block + Afternoon Electives

    • Life Skills: Monday - Thursday (9:00AM - 1:30PM)
    • Academic Skills: Monday - Thursday (10:15AM - 2:45PM)
  • Afternoon Electives 
    • Monday - Thursday (3:15PM - 5:45PM)

Course Placement

All incoming students are required to take the English placement test for placement into the appropriate course level. Upon completion of each level, students will progress in a sequential manner through the program. To achieve your personal goals, students can consult with our academic student advisors on the recommended program length.

Course Levels

ESL 1

For students with little or no English proficiency. Students learn to understand simple questions and basic statements on familiar topics when spoken very slowly and distinctly. Students learn to read and understand basic English structures.

 

ESL 2

For students with elementary English proficiency. Students learn to use familiar everyday expressions, converse in social situations, and ask simple questions.

 

ESL 3

Students will be able to comprehend descriptive sentences and frequently used expressions, and can communicate in simple social and academic situations.

 

ESL 4

Students can comprehend most conversations and discussions on familiar subjects and participate effectively in group settings. Students will be able to use more vocabulary and write with greater ease.

 

ESL 5

Students can understand main ideas of complex texts and interact with native speakers without strain. Students should also be able to speak fluently and use idiomatic expressions in colloquial conversation.

 

ESL 6

Designed to refine a student’s ability to excel in an academic and professional environment, students focus on reading, writing, and fluency production through complex and immersive activities.

 

Advanced Integrated Skills

For students who have proven skills learned in ESL 6. This course focuses on advanced fluency – improving essential speaking and written skills necessary to progress out of the advanced levels. Students develop a strong proficiency, and are able to perform intellectually in the four skills.

 

TOEFL

Learn important language skills and test-taking strategies necessary for success on the TOEFL Exam. Special emphasis will be placed on listening comprehension, grammar, reading comprehension, and ability to communicate clearly through speech and writing. Students will be prepared for an easy transition into a university classroom in the United States. 

 

Business English

Focused on vocabulary and life skills relevant to the world of international business, such as presentations, meetings and negotiations.

 

University Preparation

A college simulation course – students develop academic and life skills necessary to succeed in a U.S. based higher education system. 

 

Electives

Focused on improving a specific language skill, elective courses alternate each quarter and provide supplemental support to complement the student’s respective course. Levels of Instruction: Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced

 

American Short Stories and Authors

Understand the history and culture of the United States of America by exploring memorable authors and their masterpieces. Through their stories see how life, power, love, and adventure is represented in today's society.

 

Conversation

An interactive course focused on verbal communication skills. Gain confidence and fluency to maintain a meaningful conversation with anyone.

 

English through American Culture and Film

Film is a powerful teaching tool in language as students can experience the language in concrete situations. Students will view and study an American movie which demonstrates something unique to American culture, and improve critical thinking, and discussion skills.

 

English through TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design)

Be exposed to the world of TED, a collection of innovative ideas in the field of technology, entertainment and design. Students improve verbal and critical thinking skills through lessons inspired by TED Talks.

 

Get Expressive with Idioms

Every language has its own collection of wise sayings. This course develops the understanding and usage of idiomatic expressions to develop skills used by native English speakers.

 

Grammar Focus

English is the primary grammatical standard for the world today — in business, government, medicine, education, and so forth. Perfect your grammatical skills for everyday use through interactive activities.

 

Pronunciation

Designed to improve the accuracy of spoken words, reducing common accents for clearer speech. Build confidence necessary for public speaking and formal presentations.

We offer open admissions for this program, allowing students to enroll on any Monday. However, we recommend students to begin class at the start of each quarter as detailed below.
